As a retailer that’s passionate about recycling, supplying our customers with sustainable, eco-friendly bins is one of our top priorities. More plastic has been produced over the last 10 years than during the whole of the last century, and enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times, meaning that we have turned to other methods of manufacturing for our bins to prevent contributing to this kind of plastic pollution.
We have a large range of products made from recycled materials, including bio-degradable bin liners, so we’ve chosen three of our most popular products to feature in this post.
As one of the first bins to combine an environmentally friendly manufacturing process with a classic Victoriana style design, our Eco Recycled Hooded Top litter bin is a popular choice for councils and schools across the UK. Made from 100% recycled polyethylene (HDPE), our bins are cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Recycling polyethylene is a vital process for our environment, considering over 60 million metric tons of it is produced annually. HDPE is non-biodegradable and can take centuries to decompose, so it is incredibly important that HDPE products are recycled and used again. Our Eco Recycled Hooded Top litter bins are made by shredding, chipping and melting down pieces of unused HDPE into small pellets, which is then ground into powder to be used to manufacture our bins.
Our Recycled Wheeled Bottle Bins are made in a process called rotational moulding, where the powder polymer is placed into a hollow mould and then rotated in an oven until the polymer melts and coats the inside of the mould cavity. This process is used to create a multitude of our plastic bins and trolleys, however our Recycled Black polymer powder is made from scraps of lots of colours of plastics which is ground down and used as recycled black.
Recycled wheeled bins may not be food-safe, however they are a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative for uses such as collecting and storing empty bottles in environments such as restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels and function venues, where previously only non-sustainable plastic products have been used.
Manufactured in the UK, The Combin Cardboard Recycling Bins have a minimal carbon footprint and are an environmentally friendly solution to segregating recycling in an office environment.
The base of each eco-friendly bin is made from 100% recycled UK sourced cardboard, which has been obtained from multiple sources including national waste management companies, local councils, material traders and independent collectors/waste producers, in order to maintain supply sustainability.
Manufacturing recycled card produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials, meaning Combins are manufactured in a sustainable and eco-friendly way. As the UK uses a forest the size of Wales every year in paper and card, it’s very important that more businesses invest in eco-friendly and sustainable products.
Each Combin is supplied with a lid and x5 pictogram labels which both are made from polypropylene, a recyclable thermoplastic polymer, ensuring the whole bin can be recycled when no longer needed.
But why buy these products in the first place? To end on a fact, 90% of the litter floating in our oceans is made of plastic, around 46,000 pieces per square mile. In the North Pacific Ocean, there are 6x more plastic debris than plankton, causing deaths to our marine animals who mistake them for food. By purchasing one of our eco-friendly bins (cardboard or recycled plastic), you are helping to reduce the damage caused to our oceans and wildlife by throw-away products.
